2005 Vintage:

The season was normal up until Christmas although there was some mixed flowering. Then we had a period of three weeks of cool weather and the same thing happened late January and early February.

Veraison started a few days late around 25 January. However the cool off early February slowed veraison and this was only completed around 20 February when it heated up again. This delayed the vintage e.g on 8 March we were 4 brix behind the 2004 vintage on the same day.

However since mid February we had week after week of continuous hot dry weather and while we never made up the lost weeks from February the continuing hot dry weather well into April allowed us to pick on the 19th of April - about two weeks later than normal. The fruit was the best yet. We picked at 24 brix and with very good flavours which resulted from the extra weeks on the vines. The smaller berries this year and our low ropping rate has produced a very concentrated wine yet with our normal elegance.

The Wine:

Tasted January 2011.

Red fruits dominant wine soft on entry showing raspberry, redcurrents and cream. Quite intense though. Quite long finishing on some silky black tannins and toasty oak characters.

Ready now but will hold.
